Harrisburg, PA –   A pavement repair operation to replace concrete pavement on northbound Interstate 81 in the vicinity of the Pennsylvania Welcome Center just north of the Maryland state line will have a major impact on northbound I-81 traffic this weekend, August 24 to 27. The northbound lanes will be closed starting at around 9 PM on Friday night so that construction crews can remove damaged concrete slabs and replace them with new concrete and resurface with a blacktop overlay. The northbound lanes should reopen by 6 AM on Monday, August 27, if not sooner. This portion of I-81 is located in Antrim Township, Franklin County.

This work originally had been scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 17-20, but the forecast of rain postponed it to this weekend.

There are three approaches to traffic control for northbound traffic over this weekend:

  • First, truck traffic coming from West Virginia and Maryland is encouraged to bypass the construction work by using Interstate 70 at the I-81 interchange near Hagerstown, Maryland.
  • Secondly, as northbound motorists approach Pennsylvania, there will be an alternate route starting at Exit 1 at the Maryland/Pennsylvania state line that will utilize PA Route 163 and U.S. Route 11 to bypass the construction work and return to northbound I-81 at Exit 3. This is an option for motorists to use.
  • And finally, for those motorists continuing north on I-81 into Pennsylvania, traffic will be limited to a single lane and directed to bypass the construction work by using the off-ramp for the Pennsylvania Welcome Center and then continuing to the on-ramp back to northbound I-81. Please note that the Welcome Center building and facilities will be closed and unavailable to travelers during this weekend while traffic is diverted through it.

The repair work will be conducted for PennDOT by New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania.
